Mama Janeen, also known as Esperancia, was born in 1958. She has spent all of her life in Ruhengeri. At the age of 15, her mother developed mental illness. Her father was very old and unable to work. Because of this, Mama Janeen never had a chance to go to school. She had to work to provide for her parents and her two younger siblings.
Her marriage was arranged around the age 25. She had eight children with her husband. However, three of the children died between the ages of 1 and 1 1/2. The cause of death was believed to be malaria.
Mama Janeen recently lost her husband in 2012, possibly to poisoning. After his death she has had great difficulty finding steady work to care for her five children.
She became a Christian in 2004 and is a member of the United Methodist Church. Today her children are between the ages of 12 and 25. Mama Janeen shares that it is a great joy to be welcomed into the True Vineyard community, and she believes this to be a sacred work that God has for her. She also enjoys seeing other women come together to work like her who all see that they have one husband, and that is Jesus.
